Assignment #1: Literature Review Paper (30%)
Your literature review paper should be written in the APA format. The literature review will discuss research on your topic of interest and you are expected to search for at least 10 peer reviewed journal articles. The literature review must include a summary of the main ideas, implications for future research, as well as a synthesis of the points from the readings.
Assignment #2: Clinical Presentation Paper (30%)
You will be asked to create a presentation of a patient case using PowerPoint or Prezi that includes the following information:
• Name, age, gender and ethnicity of patient
• Clinical diagnosis and symptoms (describe the behavior with specific examples)
• Theoretical orientation and application of assessment tools (interview questions and psychometric scales) to develop an understanding of this patient’s background and behaviors. Please see my PowerPoint lecture entitled “Psychological Assessment” on Blackboard for more information on how to complete this section. You may also use specific tests (e.g., MMPI-2) if you wish; however, this is not required.
• Treatment considerations based upon your theoretical orientation(s). You may wish to describe what treatments are available or how you would treat the client based upon your chosen theoretical orientation(s). The areas included in your analysis can include military culture issues, PTSD, substance abuse problems, etc. You will have time to discuss these in class during our initial presentations, but it is not required that you present on each area during your individual presentation. Please keep in mind that this portion of your presentation is meant to demonstrate your understanding of specific theories related to counseling military personnel as well as any challenges presented by their unique circumstances.
• Include reference slide with references cited in APA format at end of PowerPoint or Prezi slides (do not count these slides toward total number required). 1. What is military culture?
Military culture is a set of values, beliefs, behaviors, and traditions that characterize and guide members of the armed forces. It is shaped by factors such as history, mission, training, and interactions with other cultures. Military culture influences how members of the armed forces view themselves and the world around them. It also affects how they interact with each other and with civilians.
2. What are some of the unique aspects of military culture?
Some of the unique aspects of military culture include a strong emphasis on hierarchy, discipline, and order; a focus on duty, honor, and country; a commitment to service and sacrifice; and a sense of camaraderie and esprit de corps. Military culture also has its own language, customs, and traditions.
3. What are some of the challenges that military culture presents?
Military culture can present challenges for members of the armed forces who are not accustomed to it. These challenges can include adjusting to a highly structured environment, following strict rules and regulations, and dealing with separation from family and friends. Military culture can also be isolating, since members of the armed forces often live and work in close quarters with people who share their values and beliefs.
4. How does military culture differ from civilian culture?
Military culture differs from civilian culture in many ways. One major difference is that civilian cultures tend to be more individualistic, while military cultures are more collectivist. Civilian cultures also tend to place less emphasis on hierarchy, discipline, and order than military cultures do. Another major difference is that civilians generally do not have the same commitment to service and sacrifice as members of the armed forces do. Finally, civilian cultures are not as insular as military cultures can be. This means that civilians have more opportunities to interact with people from different backgrounds and cultures.
5. What are some of the ways in which the military attempts to foster a positive culture?
The military attempts to foster a positive culture by instilling values such as duty, honor, country, service, and sacrifice in its members. The military also provides training that helps members develop skills such as teamwork, leadership, and decision-making. In addition, the military offers programs and services that support members’ physical and mental health. Finally, the military strives to create an environment that is respectful and inclusive of all members regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.

The following are questions for discussion in the weekly discussion thread for Week Four. Please select one or more of the following questions to answer in your initial post. You may also develop a new question from the text, lectures, or your own experience and research on this topic that you believe would stimulate additional discussion. Use appropriate APA style in-text citations and reference list entries when you make use of outside sources. Your initial post should be at least 250 words long, not counting direct quotations. Your responses to classmates’ posts should also address their ideas and elaborate on your own thoughts using references when appropriate. All posts must be made by the due date indicated in the COUN 6404S Course Schedule, and you are required to respond to two other students’ posts by the end of the week. Do not wait until the last minute to post; instead, post early enough so that others can read and comment on your work before they submit their own work at the end of the week. It is important to keep up with all class discussions since each one builds upon prior ones throughout the COUN 6404S Course.
1. There are many cultural differences between military families and civilian families in addition to differences in values, beliefs, attitudes, expectations, rules and traditions, etc., which influence day-to-day interactions among family members as well as a wide range of other interactions with people inside and outside of their families—including those who have never been connected to military families before. Define what you understand by military culture; then discuss how living within this culture has influenced your development as a person and how it may have impacted any future goals you have established for yourself? In what ways do you feel that this experience has prepared you well or unprepared you for serving as a helping professional? What kinds of things do you think are most important for helping professionals working with clients from military families to understand about them? How can we best work with these clients when we ourselves don’t come from military backgrounds? What does it mean when we say “military culture is culturally diverse”? What advice would you give helping professionals working with clients from such cultures? Include examples from reading materials or your own experiences or observations to support your responses.
2. Many veterans returning home after deployment face tremendous challenges reintegrating into civilian life due to a wide range of psychological problems caused by their experiences during combat—particularly those who have served during wars in Iraq and Afghanistan over recent years—many of whom suffer from PTSD that often goes undiagnosed because they are reluctant to seek help out of fear that doing so will adversely affect their careers or lives in other ways due to negative stereotypes about mental illness among soldiers that continue even today despite efforts to change them by both civilian society and the U.S. military itself over recent years because they were taught by others throughout their lives that seeking help was seen as weak or unpatriotic—the latter being an especially big problem among men returning home because they are expected by society to conform strictly to traditional gender roles including male stereotypes regarding toughness, strength, stoicism under pressure, bravery under fire, etc., which often leads them struggle silently with depression or anxiety because talking about feelings is usually frowned upon as ‘unmanly.’ But these veteran’s PTSD symptoms often manifest themselves through aggression toward others—especially those closest them such as spouses/significant others/children/parents/siblings/friends—and sometimes result in domestic violence incidents against them or suicides among these vets resulting from such problems which is compounded by the fact that many civilians lack an understanding about what veterans go through upon returning home due to such things as media portrayals about these veterans having had little contact with actual veterans themselves making it difficult for them comprehend what these veterans go through when returning home whose real lives often don’t resemble anything like what is depicted in popular movies/television shows featuring fictional portrayals of them which fail to provide any accurate representations about how they really think/feel upon returning home after serving overseas which further exacerbates problems related veteran reintegration into society when public opinion based primarily on such inaccurate portrayal’s leads civilians who know little about this issue become confused/frustrated thereby resulting misunderstandings/tensions which further complicate efforts veteran reintegration into society thereby leading more veteran suicides which only increases public confusion about this issue thus creating a self-perpetuating cycle something we COUN 6404S Week 5 Discussion 1 (20 Questions)
COUN 6404S Course: COUN 6404S – Military Culture* (5 credits)
Question 1. What are the three primary goals of military social work? How does each goal relate to the others? How might these goals be different for veteran social work? Why is it important for military social workers to understand the military chain of command?
The three primary goals of military social work are to promote the readiness of service members and their families, to provide support during times of crisis, and to help service members and their families transition back to civilian life. Each goal is interrelated, as promoting readiness requires supporting service members and their families during times of crisis, and helping with transitions back to civilian life can help reduce the likelihood of future crises.
The goals of veteran social work may be slightly different, as the focus is on providing support to veterans after they have left the military. However, many of the same principles apply, such as promoting readiness and helping with transitions. It is still important for veteran social workers to understand the military chain of command, as this can help them better understand the needs and experiences of their clients.

**COUN 6404S Week 6 Assignment (20 Questions) for COUN 6404S – Military Culture* (5 credits) (COUN 6404S)**
**Part 1: Multicultural Awareness Inventory**
The Multicultural Awareness Inventory (MAI) will provide you with some important insights into your own cultural perspectives and biases. Please complete the following:
1. Take the Multicultural Awareness Inventory at the following website: http://www.cpp.com/products/tki/default.aspx.
a. Be sure to write down your individual results on each of the subscales for future reference as you will be asked to refer to these later in this assignment.
b. Once you have completed the MAI, answer the following questions related to your results:
i. Which subscale had the highest score? Why do you think this is so?
ii. Which subscale had the lowest score? Why do you think this is so?
iii. How accurate do you believe these results to be? Why or why not?
iv. What do you think are some things that could have influenced your results on this inventory (e.g., past experiences, cultural background, education level, etc.)?
v. What did you learn about yourself from taking this inventory? How might an understanding of your own cultural perspectives and biases be helpful to you as a counselor working with diverse clients?
c. Finally, choose one subscale from those with which you scored lowest and reflect on what specific things you might do to become more aware of and sensitive to that particular area of multiculturalism in counseling (e.g., if you scored low on race/ethnicity, what might you do to become more culturally competent with clients from different racial/ethnic groups?). Be specific in your response and identify resources that would be helpful in achieving this goal (e.g., articles, books, trainings, etc.).
2\. Using what you learned about yourself from taking the MAI, write a letter of apology to someone who was harmed by your cultural insensitivity in counseling (this can be either a real or fictional client). Be specific about what happened and how it made the client feel as well as what steps you will take in order to ensure that such an event does not happen again in counseling with future clients from diverse backgrounds.*
3\. Now that you have reflected on your own cultural perspectives and biases identified through taking the MAI, choose one of the following two case scenarios below and address each of the following questions specific to that scenario:*
Scenario A: You are counseling a gay male client who expresses significant distress related to his sexual orientation and struggles with suicidal ideation as a result of being ostracized by his family members and religious community due to his sexuality.*
Scenario B: You are counseling a female client who has been sexually abused by her father throughout childhood and adolescence.*
a\. Based on what you learned about yourself from taking the MAI, how might your own cultural perspectives or biases influence how you work with this client? In other words, how might your own cultural values or beliefs get in the way of providing culturally competent counseling services to this client? Be specific.*
b\. What are some specific things that you could do during counseling sessions with this client in order to become more culturally sensitive and aware when working with them (e.g., active listening skills, empathic statements, etc.)?*
c\. What are some things that you could do outside of counseling sessions in order to further develop your multicultural competence when working with clients like this one (e.g., read articles or books related to their particular area of diversity)?*
Part 2: Understanding Your Clients’ Experiences Related To Their Cultural Backgrounds*
In order for counselors to provide culturally competent services to clients from diverse backgrounds it is important for counselors not only to understand their own cultural perspectives but also those of their clients. In part 2 of this assignment we will explore ways for counselors not only identify areas where their clients’ cultural values may differ from their own but also understand how those differences may impact their clients’ experiences.*
4\. Choose one area from each of three different dimensions of multiculturalism listed below (for a total of three areas chosen) and address each of these questions for each area chosen.*
Dimensions of Multiculturalism: Race/Ethnicity; Religion; Gender/Sexuality
Dimensions of Race/Ethnicity include but are not limited to White; Black; Hispanic; Asian American; Native American; Pacific Islander; Biracial/Multiracial; Middle Eastern
Dimensions of Religion include but are not limited to Christianity; Judaism; Islam; Hinduism; Buddhism; Sikhism
Dimensions of Gender/Sexuality include but are not limited t Male/Female; Transgender/Genderqueer; Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual
a\. Identify several key values or beliefs related specifically to each area chosen above that may differ significantly from your own personal values or beliefs.* For example, if choosing Christianity as an area within religion, values or beliefs related specifically to Christianity could include but are not limited t belief in Jesus Christ as Savior or belief in attending church every Sunday morning.* If choosing Native American as an area within race/ethnicity key values or beliefs related specifically Native Americans could include but are not limited t value placed on nature or belief in having strong family ties.* If choosing transgender as an area within gender/sexuality key values or beliefs related specifically transgender individuals could include but are not limited t belief about living life according t assigned gender at birth versus chosen gender identity.* b\. How might these differences between your personal values or beliefs related t each area chosen above impact how well you understand your clients’ experiences related t their culture?* For example if choosing Muslim as an area within religion key differences between Muslims’ religious values and beliefs versus counselors’ personal values may impact whether counselors can fully understand how important religion is Muslim’s lives since many counselors likely do not place similar emphasis on religion themselves.* If choosing White individuals as an area within race then differences betweenWhite individuals’ attitudes toward racial issues versus counselors’ attitudes toward racial issues may impact whether counselors can fully understand White individuals experiences surrounding racism because they themselves may never have experienced it directly.* c\. What are some specific things that counselors can do during initial contact with clients (i.e., intake process) t help ensure understanding between counselor and client regarding any potential differences between personal values held by counselor versus those held by client?* d\. Once established rapport has been developed between counselor and client what specific techniques can counselors use during subsequent counseling sessions t help ensure understanding regarding any potential differences between personal values held by counselor versus those held by client?* 5\. Choose one population group from those listed below (for a total f three areas chosen) and address each f these questions for each population group chosen:* Populations groups include but are nt limited t Veterans f Operations Enduring Freedom & Iraqi Freedom & Their Families(OEF&OIF); Military Sexual Trauma Survivors(MST); Wounded Warriors & Disabled Veterans(WW&DV); Homeless Veterans & Veterans Experiencing Homelessness(HV&VH); Female Veterans(FV); Gay & Lesbian & Bisexual Veterans(GLBV)* Each f these populations groups has unique challenges faced throughout military service due t barriers faced based n need f closeted status due t Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy which resulted n fear f discharge based n sexual orientation(*GLBV), unique experiences faced by women during service including sexual harassment & rape(*FV), increased risk exposure t combat-related traumas(*OEF&OIF), increased risk exposure t military sexual trauma(*MST), additional physical challenges faced due t injuries sustained during service(*WW&DV), additional mental health challenges faced due tdifficulties adjusting back home after military service(*OEF&OIF), increased risk exposure experiencing homelessness(*HV&VH)* a\. As we discussed earlier in class various factors such as war zone exposure combat-related traumas social support systems access employment opportunities access mental health services among others contribute greatly toward increased risk experiencing psychological distress during post-service adjustment period veterans returning home military operations Enduring Freedom Iraqi Freedom(& OEF&OIF). Identify at least two f three factors just mentioned which impact psychological adjustment veteran population group chose focus n part 2 assignment.(Example answer based n OEF&OIF veteran population group given below.)* Examples OEF&OIF veterans face multiple barriers accessing adequate social support systems reintegrate back civilian life often result feelings isolation loneliness among others leading depression anxiety among other mental health diagnoses…[show more]

fulfill the applied behavior analysis program requirements until they can be enrolled into this class again next year if they successfully complete the class or until they graduate from the program after taking it next time it is offered as a regular COUN 6404S Course either online or face to face format since they cannot take more than 3 credits per term online independent study COUN 6404S Courses through an agreement that NSU has with APAC based on their accreditation agreement with APAC for ABAs that were signed last year by both parties that also includes APAC’s request that we only allow up to 3 credits per term and not more than 9 credits per year which is why most other COUN 6404S Courses offered through our department are either three credits or six credits including practicum COUN 6404S Courses so this class has been modified from five credits to three credits to comply with NSU’s accreditation agreement with APAC so that students will not have any issues taking these COUN 6404S Courses with them when transferring them back to APAC later when applying for ABAs after taking them at NSU since ABAs have to take 9 credits each year which is equivalent to 3 classes each semester but can be online independent study COUN 6404S Courses since it says on our degree plan which was created by Dr Judi Brownell last year that students can take up to 9 credits as online independent study COUN 6404S Courses out of the 36 required credits needed for ABAs so this way ABAs who already graduated from our department or current ABAs will not have any issues transferring these classes back later if they choose too after taking them at NSU since it says on our degree plan for ABAs which was approved by both Nova Southeastern University’s Board Of Trustees last November 2017 and also approved by both APAC and ACBSP since I got confirmation from Phoebe Murphy today in Undergraduate Admissions Office here at NSU saying she confirmed this change while talking with Annemarie today because Annemarie wanted her permission before making this change but Annemarie talked it over with Dr Judi Brownell first before talking with Phoebe Murphy today who said she would talk it over with both Dr Brownell tomorrow morning Monday August 20th 2018 right after she talks with Tonia Wright tomorrow morning Monday August 20th 2018 since Tonia Wright needs all changes made official no later than Wednesday August 22nd 2018 before she sends us all an email saying what changes were made along with all other changes made official no later than Wednesday August
